                                       What is IIPES?

IIPES is an academic program which gathers more than 80 students from more than 22 countries during 3 weeks in the beautiful island of Crete. The program explores major political, economic and cultural issues important to the region. Students attend courses in political economy, history, philosophy, and conflict resolution. In addition to classes, students participate in dialogue designed to promote international exchange. This combination of events leads to life-long friendships and an exchange of ideas that cannot be gained elsewhere.

                               Where does it take place?

Greece has provided the perfect backdrop to IIPES since the program’s first session in the summer of 1996. Having explored mainland during its initial years (Olympia, Athens, Thessaloniki), IIPES settled in 2001 at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) on the island of Crete, where it has been hosted ever since.

                               What is IIPES Mission?

IIPES strives to build support for the values of freedom, democracy, and a free-market economy, among outstanding university students from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds. The Institute prepares participants to assume leadership positions through workshops on conflict analysis and resolution and group discussions on the concepts of political economy, incorporating a specific focus on the region. By fostering the close interaction of these young leaders, the Institute facilitates the formation of cross-border networks among participants, which is intended to last throughout their professional lives. As a consequence of living and studying with a group of talented and motivated peers, and learning from outstanding faculty, the young leaders attending this Institute are inspired to get involved in efforts to promote change in their countries. The Institute strives to teach young leaders in this volatile region how limited government involvement, the rule of law, and a market economy can promote economic cooperation, tolerance, and a civil society.

                                   The History of IIPES

The International Institute for Political and Economic Studies (IIPES) was established in 1996 in recognition of the need to build additional bridges of communication and understanding among the Christian, Judaic, and Muslim world. Particularly inspiring were the remarks of Ambassador Frank Shakespeare at The Fund’s Board of Governors conference regarding, among other things, the growing influence of Islam in the 21st century. Given that the eastern is the cradle of civilisation and the crossroads of the world's three major religions, an educational program involving promising university students from all corners of the region can make a valuable contribution to the improvement of intercultural understanding among the next generation of leaders.

                                How can I participate?

More than 90 participants are recruited from countries in the Middle East , South East Europe, and the Balkans, in addition to a number of promising young Americans. The 2007 session of the Institute saw the number of its students increase to 85. If you wish to participate, apply online now!!!

                                 Τhe Alumni Network

The continuing and sustainable success of the Institute is dependent on the extent to which the graduates demonstrate a commitment to the ideas of democracy, the rule of law, and mutual understanding as they move into careers in government, journalism, and business. One indication of the success of the Institute comes from the support it is receiving in official circles. Thriving alumni chapters throughout the region are proof of the durability of the participants’ ties to the Institute. The Institute's participants and alumni represent a reservoir of talent for corporations seeking bright, educated individuals who are fluent in English. Many of our graduates have achieved positions of leadership in business, government and academia in their native countries.

                                Who are the organizers?

The International Institute for Political and Economic Studies is organized by The Fund for American Studies in cooperation with the Greek Association for Atlantic and European Cooperation, under the scientific supervision of Georgetown Universitys.

                                                                    The Fund for American Studies

Since 1970, The Fund for American Studies and Georgetown University have partnered in organizing educational programs for motivated students with high potential, not only from the United States but from all over the world. The continuous success of this cooperation was a product of mutual conception. The Fund is the continuation of the Charles Edison Youth Fund that aims to educate new generations of leaders, incorporating free-market economics and taking a new approach towards traditional values that transcend any constitutional government.
