The International Institute for Political and Economic Studies (IIPES) 2009 is starting tomorrow!
Tomorrow, July 25th, the
International Institute for Political and Economic Studies (IIPES) is starting in Chania, Crete, bringing together 90 students from 26 countries: Greece, USA, Albania, Bosnia and Hercogovina, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kosovo UNMIK, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Palestinian Authority, Romania, Serbia, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.
From July 25th to August 10th IIPES students will study important principles of political and economic organization and how those ideas relate to international conflict and conflict resolution. The Institute is intended for the serious student who enjoys exploring ideas about politics, culture, and economics, and who is willing to be challenged by stimulating ideas and cultural exchange. The Institute teaches participants to understand individual liberty, the rule of law, and the price system within the contexts of cooperation, tolerance, and a civil society. In addition to these lessons, students participate in a conflict resolution workshop designed to teach students ways to break down the barriers between historical conflicts.
The International Institute for Political and Economic Studies (IIPES) was launched by
The Fund for American Studies and the Greek Association for Atlantic and European Cooperation and under academic guidance of Georgetown University in 1996 to provide a much-needed academic and leadership experience for the young leaders of the Middle East and the Balkans. IIPES finds a common ground between the forces that divide people. Despite being the cradle of civilization, the Eastern Mediterranean is the site of enormous historic and current tension. It is a region marked by conflict, but it is also rich with opportunity and cultural beauty by serving as the crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa. The region offers unique windows of opportunity for international and multicultural learning experiences. It is in this spirit that IIPES is offered to outstanding students who demonstrate a potential for leadership.
