FORMAL VS. NON-FORMAL EDUCATION – RECIPROCITY INTHE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUTH/COMPREHENSIVE METHODOLOGIES

Greek Association for Atlantic and European Cooperation Education and Science Committee organized a discussion forum on Non-Formal as opposed to Formal Education. In the frame of the multi-conference Capital + Vision held by The Greek-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Hilton Athens, on 23 -25 of September, 2011,

The skills and knowledge that one can gain through Non -Formal and Informal Education worth equally with those that can be gained through Formal Education. The eminent Delor’s report to the UNESCO (Delor 1996) emphasizes on the connection of those three types of Education and started the intense activity in European level upon non-Formal Education development. The basic classical separation that was adopted by UNESCO upon Education is divided in three big categories: Formal Education, Informal Education, Non Formal Education.

A lot of work has been done among the European Union and the Council of Europe for the recognition of these three categories of Education.

According to the given introduction, the speakers and the guests discussed the topic on examples of GAAEC experiences and thought of contribution to the development of Non-Formal Education.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversaryof the Atlantic Council of Serbia

Along with the colleagues from the Atlantic Treaty Association, diplomats and political leaders of Serbia, GAEEC President Mr. Theodossis Georgiou joined the partner and President of the Atlantic Council of Serbia Mr. Vladan Zivulovic, to celebrate its 10th anniversary on September 15th 2011 in Belgrade.

In his speech, Mr. Georgiou referred to historical background of the creation of the Serbian Council, while during his Chairmanship in the Atlantic Treaty Association the new membership status of the Observer was added to the ATA Constitution. This important concept allowed countries that were not participants in the NATO's Partnership for Peace, to join the ATA family and were able to promote NATO as well as democratic values to their countries, including the Atlantic Council of Serbia in 2001. The establishment of the Atlantic Council of Serbia was an important element in building Euro-Atlantic ties for the future. Later on, Serbia consequently joined PfP and became an Associate member of ATA in 2006.

Mr. Georgiou also referred on the history of Greece and Serbia, emphasizing on historical, cultural, religious, and economic features & links, between the two countries, which as he said "reflect a close co-operation model in the Balkan region." Mr Georgiou also believes that, the lessons being taught by history have to be remembered and taken into serious consideration, so that common expectations between the Greek Association and the Serbian Council will be achieved on the intergovernmental level.

Traditionally, while being abroad, Mr. Georgiou hosted the reunion of the Alumni of the GAAEC programs. Dinner in New Belgrade was attended by the 15 Alumni participants & more joined in at the conference in honour of the 10th Anniversary of the Serbian Council.

During this event Mr. Georgiou also participated in the Belgrade Security Forum to discuss about the topic between the Balkan and Global security's common interests and idealistic differences. The President of Serbia, Mr. Boris Tadic opened the Forum with the key note speech.

In summer 2011, H.E. President Tadic also delivered the honorary lecture and received the award of Vasek & Anna Maria Polak for achievements in democratic and economic reform. The ceremony annually takes place during the Commencement Exercise of American Institute for Political and Economic Studies in Prague, in which Mr. Georgiou was present, as a member of the Board of Regents in the Fund for American Studies.
